“Pink” blended with bright and radiant colors of life on the wall of the entrance to the city of Salt in an attractive way, and drawings were formed carrying awareness messages, decorated with flowers, trees and bright plants that inspire love and hope.
Those murals that stopped passers-by to read the message of art directed to the community, which was to raise awareness of the importance of early breast cancer screening. And in this month, October of each year, the World Health Organization launches its invitation to all segments of society, to participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Month every year, and in various countries of the world. The activities aim to increase interest in this disease and provide the necessary support to raise awareness of its seriousness, detect it and treat it, as well as provide patients with it with palliative care. Jordan, like other countries of the world, is seeking at these times to create space in various activities, with the participation of most of the official and civil community institutions, to be working in the field of awareness. Since art is a shortcut and close to the heart and sight, the cooperation agreement was launched between the artists and the King Hussein Cancer Center, in an effective step to fly in the world of art and murals that brimming with hope, with colors and lines that mimic the same goal, which is “raising awareness of the importance of early examination.” .
These murals were implemented in Irbid and Jerash, under the supervision of the owners of the idea, the plastic artists Aseel Azizieh and another artist, and they recently moved to implement the third mural in the city of Salt, to be the last stop, among a group of murals in the governorates that will be painted for this year. The artist Azizia confirmed that there is an agreement between the two parties, that every year, murals that are easily accessible to pedestrians in the streets will be painted, so that they can see the message that is directed to the various segments of society about the importance of early breast cancer screening. Anyone in the community can quickly reach the message.
The pink color that dominates the wall is its first feature, after it became easy for anyone to know the slogan of breast cancer awareness campaigns; Azizia showed that art is one of the simple and easy ways to reach society, especially women. She explains, “Therefore, we note that the awareness message arrived without lectures, especially in light of the different societies in which the woman may find it difficult or unwilling to attend a symposium dealing with this campaign.” Azizia adds, that in her institution they were able to find a different message method, so that the visual image would be the closest, and take root quickly in the mind; “We believe that the visual image is a summary of many meanings,” as she put it. Regarding the implementation of murals in the governorates, Azizia sees it as an attempt to motivate women and search for strengths within them and encourage them to have an early examination that helps in full treatment in the event of a disease, so that they are able to face fear and take care of themselves.
The murals were not only passing events in those governorates, but those in charge of them were keen to have cooperation and to integrate voluntary work with the local community, so that a group of them participate in these drawings, as in the participation of children, who were presented with the idea and made them aware of the importance of having An artistic message to raise awareness of women in their communities, whether they are mother, sister, aunt, aunt, grandmother, and even the teacher, and this has already been done in cooperation with school students who participated in the mural. Azizia believes that the participation of the local community and the people of the region in implementing these murals reflects their strong belief in the importance of awareness, as well as preserving those drawings that increase the beauty of the place and its visual space, especially as it extends to large areas.
The area of the Salt mural is up to 180 m in length and 5 m in width. It is large and requires time and effort in its work. The idea of the graphics carries many messages that serve the same goal. He pointed out that the general nature of it enhances the role of women in society, and the importance of educating them to be the first person who takes care of themselves, and who carries an entire society on their shoulders. It notes that the idea of “beauty” in the mural was not lost on them during its implementation, taking into account the importance of the view being attractive, while staying away from visual distortion, as it is one of the basics of mural work, and this is an indication of the importance of visual culture, especially since the mural extends over a large area and is strategically located in Place.
She expressed her happiness for this cooperation with the King Hussein Cancer Foundation; The cooperation will be renewed annually, and this indicates the success of art in reaching the desired goal, expressing full readiness for cooperation that results in the entry of art in various aspects of life, and the dissemination of a culture of visual beauty in societies of different place and content. And that the message of art reaches easily, because it is the first mother tongue that transcends languages, and its content reaches everyone, and in the awareness campaign for the early detection of breast cancer, the pink color came to be part of the message.
