Layers of Longing
This painting from the “Human Echoes” series, called Layers of Longing
2022
acrylic on canvas
120x100cm
The core of this painting is the aggressive intrusion of the dark, earthy pigments (the umbers and charcoals) into the serene turquoise space. Under the title “Replacement,” the dark center feels like a “new reality” that is actively burying the “old reality” represented by the blue. The thick, physical nature of the impasto suggests that this replacement is not subtle—it is a heavy, permanent displacement.
Artist’s Statement:
“Replacement is an exploration of the layers we build over our past. In the human experience, we rarely delete; we simply overwrite. Through the collision of dense, terrestrial pigments and retreating ethereal blues, the work captures the weight of the ‘new’ as it settles over the ‘old.’ It is a portrait of the scars left behind when one phase of life, or one version of a memory, is forcibly replaced by another.”
