Faces of Time
Year: 2020
Medium: Mixed Media Sculpture (Clay, Brass, Paper, and Basalt)
Overview
Faces of Time is a compelling triptych of sculptural busts that explores the raw, visceral nature of human emotion and the transformative power of time. Each piece in the series serves as a silent witness to the complexities of the human condition, capturing fleeting moments of introspection, sorrow, and resilience.
Artistic Description
The installation consists of three distinct, hand-formed clay heads, each mounted on a minimalist basalt pedestal. The artist utilizes a rugged, expressive technique, leaving visible tool marks and deep crevices that mimic the weathering of stone or the deep-set lines of an aging face.
Texture & Form: The surfaces are deliberately unrefined, featuring a pale, bone-like finish that emphasizes the play of light and shadow. The “cracked” aesthetic suggests a fragility beneath a hardened exterior, symbolizing how experiences etch themselves onto our identities.
The Pedestals: The use of dark, sleek basalt pillars provides a sharp architectural contrast to the organic, textured clay. This grounding creates a museum-grade presence, elevating the faces to a state of timeless importance.
Symbolism: Gold-toned brass accents and plaques add a touch of regality and permanence. The title itself suggests that these are not merely individuals, but archetypes of the eras we carry within us.
Key Features
Emotional Depth: Ranging from hollowed eyes to downturned mouths, the sculptures evoke a deep sense of empathy.
Material Contrast: The interplay between the soft, malleable origin of clay and the solid, eternal nature of stone and metal.
Contemporary Aesthetic: A perfect blend of ancient, totemic influence and modern minimalist presentation.
“These forms represent more than just features; they are the topography of lived experience.”
