Description

The Fingerprinted Rock is a poignant sculptural study of time, pressure, and the tactile history of the earth. Sourced from the shores of the Black Sea, this natural stone possesses a rare, ergonomic geometry that immediately suggests a human connection.

The sculpture is characterized by its distinctive “thumb-up” silhouette, featuring a series of deep, natural indentations—or “fingerprints”—pitted across its surface. These hollows, carved by thousands of years of sediment friction and the unique mineral composition of the Black Sea’s depths, create a surface that feels both ancient and deeply personal. Its pale, earthen hue is speckled with darker mineral deposits, telling the story of the geological shifts and currents that shaped it.

Mounted on a custom walnut wood base with a sleek brushed-steel pin, the stone is elevated from a simple shoreline find to a piece of high-modernist art. It stands as a testament to the “found object” philosophy: that the most profound sculptures are often those already completed by the hands of nature.

Artist’s Perspective

“In The Fingerprinted Rock, the Black Sea has left its mark. My role was simply to provide the pedestal for the sea’s own handiwork, highlighting the surprising intimacy found in the rawest elements of our planet.”
